How Long Do Antidepressants Take to Work?
Antidepressants are not instant. Learn typical timelines and what to expect during the first weeks.
Most antidepressants need two to four weeks for initial effects and six to eight weeks for fuller benefit.
Some side effects appear before mood improvement — nausea, sleep changes, or temporary anxiety increases.
Do not stop medication abruptly without medical guidance. Your PMHNP monitors progress at follow-up visits.
If there is no improvement after an adequate trial, dose changes or switching medications may be discussed.
Combining medication with therapy often produces better outcomes than either alone for many patients.
