Physical Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety is not just in your head. Learn how it affects the body and when to seek medical and psychiatric evaluation.

The mind and body are connected. Anxiety activates the fight-or-flight system, producing real physical sensations that can mimic other conditions.

Common physical symptoms include rapid heartbeat, chest tightness, sweating, trembling, nausea, headaches, and muscle tension.

Some people experience dizziness, numbness, or tingling during high anxiety. These sensations are distressing but often related to hyperventilation and arousal.

Because physical symptoms overlap with cardiac or other medical issues, new or severe symptoms should be evaluated medically when appropriate.

When medical causes are ruled out or co-occur with persistent worry, psychiatric care can address both the emotional and physical burden of anxiety.
